Every "best employee monitoring software" list is secretly the same list. Vendors, features, a star rating. What is missing is the part engineers would insist on in any other purchase: a test plan. This post gives you one. It is a short evaluation harness for employee monitoring software that you can run in four weeks and score on a single page.
The test plan at a glance
| Phase | Duration | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Week 0 | What do we believe today? |
| Smoke test | Week 1 | Does it install and report correctly? |
| Soak test | Weeks 2-3 | Is the data stable and trusted? |
| Review | Week 4 | Did it change a decision? |
Phase 0: write your assumptions down
Before installing anything, record what you believe: who is overloaded, where time goes, which projects slip. These are your expected values. A tool is only useful if it can confirm or correct them.
Phase 1: smoke test
Install on a volunteer team of five to eight. Check the basics:
[ ] Installs on every OS in the team [ ] Reports appear within a day [ ] Idle time is not flagged for calls and reading [ ] Categories can be changed per role [ ] Employees can open their own dashboard Any failure here is a deal breaker, not a bug to wait on.
Phase 2: soak test
Leave it running for two weeks and watch for false positives. If a designer in a long review looks idle, tune the settings and see whether the tool copes. Data you cannot trust after tuning is data you will not use.
Phase 3: review against assumptions
Compare the report with your Phase 0 notes. Score each tool:
- Accuracy: did it match reality after tuning?
- Clarity: can a manager read it in five minutes?
- Fairness: would the team be comfortable if the dashboard were public?
- Actionability: did it change at least one decision?
- Effort: how much admin did it need?
Below 18 out of 25 means it does not ship.
