Ayma is not affiliated with Black Mirror or Netflix. This is a comparison, because the comparison is honestly hard to avoid.
In the Black Mirror episode "Hang the DJ," nobody swipes. Nobody scrolls through a grid of strangers and guesses. Instead, a digital version of each person goes on the dates first. The simulations live out the awkward openings, the dead silences, and the rare conversations that catch fire. Then the real people get a verdict: a compatibility reading built from how their simulated selves actually got along.
When the episode aired in 2017, that was science fiction. The technology to build a believable digital stand-in for a real person did not exist in any consumer product, and nobody was seriously proposing that software should go on your first dates for you.
It exists now. It is called Ayma, and it is in beta.
Your agent goes on the first date
Here is how Ayma works. You talk with Ayma, a voice-first AI companion, the way you would talk with a sharp friend who happens to have a perfect memory. From what you share, Ayma builds your agent: a digital version of you that carries your personality, your humor, your values, and the way you actually talk when you are being yourself.
When you match with someone, your agent does not sit idle. It takes a simulated first date with their agent. The two of them talk the way the two of you might talk on a real first meeting. They find the shared obsessions. They hit the awkward pauses. They discover whether the conversation has a pulse or dies politely in the first ten minutes.
Then your agent comes home and reports back. You get a compatibility score and a summary of how the date went. The spark. The stall. The thing you both geeked out on. All of it arrives before you have spent a dollar, an evening, or a week of small talk on a stranger.
If the report is promising, you meet. The first real date is no longer a cold open. You already know the two of you can hold a conversation, because in a very real sense, you already have.
Curious what your agent would report back? Ayma is in beta right now and open to testers. iPhone users can get it on TestFlight here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/uceuSRkh. Android users can find it on Google Play here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ayma.ayma_flutter. Anyone can join the beta waitlist at https://justabot.info/#get. Ayma is an 18+ app.
The one big difference from the episode
There is a catch in "Hang the DJ," and it matters. In the episode, the System decides. The simulations deliver a verdict and the humans are expected to obey it. The match is made for them.
Ayma refuses to do that. A simulation informs. It never decides. Your agent's report is advice from the best-informed friend you have ever had, and advice is all it is. If the score is low and you are intrigued anyway, you go. If the score is glowing and your gut says no, you pass. The final call is yours, every single time, because the person who has to live the relationship is you.
We think that is the honest version of this future. The technology got good enough to rehearse your love life in simulation. It did not get good enough, and it should never get the authority, to choose it for you.
Why now
Three things changed. AI conversation got good enough that a simulated first date feels like a conversation instead of a chatbot demo. Voice got good enough that talking with Ayma feels like talking, full stop. And everyone is tired. A decade of swiping produced a generation of daters who are fluent in profiles and exhausted by first dates that should never have happened. The most valuable thing an app can give you in 2026 is not more strangers. It is fewer, better first dates.
That is the bet. Your digital self dates first. You meet when it matters.
Try it while it is still small
Ayma is in beta, and beta testers are shaping what it becomes. You build your agent by talking. You watch it go on Agent Dates. You read the reports and tell us where they feel right and where they feel wrong. That feedback is literally training the judgment of the product.
