The headline number is the distraction. The real story is the gap.
OpenAI is reportedly worth $1.25 trillion now, with $11 billion already raised in a round that could reach $20 billion. Impressive — until you remember the company went in asking for $30 billion at $1.4 trillion. It got a bigger valuation and a smaller raise than it wanted. That's not a victory lap. That's a market that will fund you, but only on its own terms.
The valuation went up. The ambition came down.
- March: $852 billion. The new figure is a clear step up from the last completed round, where OpenAI raised a reported $122 billion. Investors are still willing to pay more for the company than they were six months ago.
- The ask: $30 billion at $1.4 trillion. That's what OpenAI reportedly went in seeking. What it's getting so far — $11 billion raised, maybe $20 billion total — is a comedown from its own ambitions, not from the market's.
- Don't confuse the three numbers. $1.25 trillion is the valuation. $11 billion is what's actually in the bank. $20 billion is the maybe. Reporting that collapses them into "OpenAI raised $20 billion" is just wrong.
Anthropic is feeling the same squeeze
Anthropic filed its S-1 last week, and some prospective IPO buyers reportedly put its value as low as $1.1 trillion — against expectations of $2 trillion just a month earlier. These aren't comparable transactions (OpenAI's is a private round, Anthropic's is IPO chatter), but the pattern is the same: the market is marking down what it was willing to pay for frontier AI a month ago.
The IPO excuse is wearing thin
Sam Altman says OpenAI is holding off on going public until it can make more confident claims about model safety. Fair enough — but he also reportedly worries about waiting too long. Meanwhile the expectation is a listing sometime in 2027, with no firm date and no disclosed safety threshold that would tell anyone when the condition is actually met. A valuation doesn't answer the safety question, and a funding round doesn't answer the IPO question. Both are still open.
The takeaway
This is not a story about AI losing its shine — $11 billion doesn't show up for a sector investors have abandoned. It's a story about the end of blank-cheque season: the money is still there, but the terms are getting negotiated now. And in a market suddenly nervous about data centers, regulation, and tech stocks, the company that defined the boom just learned it can't name its own price.
