The openSUSE Project has released Leap 16.1, integrating Leap Micro into the main distribution via a new immutable mode.
Discover the updated software stack, including Python 3.14, PostgreSQL 18, KDE Plasma 6.6, and container tooling improvements.
New system protection feature
The biggest change in the new version is the integration of Leap Micro directly into the core system through a new protection feature. The separate release of Leap Micro is being discontinued, so there will be no versions 6.3 or 7.0.
Users can choose this protection mode during installation via the community installer. This mode uses core system files that do not change and are updated securely in the background. Applications can be installed from within special isolated environments.
Those who already use Leap Micro can translate using a special tool, which is considered experimental. Leap 16.1 is released on the same day as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.1.
What's changing in programs and tools
The KDE Plasma desktop environment has been significantly upgraded along with its essential companion tools. GNOME remains at the same version with bug fixes, while other desktop environments have also received improvements.
