For a local business, the Google Business Profile (the box that shows up in Maps and on the right side of search) often gets more views than the website itself. The good news: most of the improvements are free and take minutes. Here are the five I check first.
1. The right primary category. Google leans heavily on your primary category to decide which searches you show up for. Pick the most specific one that matches your main service ("Emergency plumber", not just "Contractor"), then add a few secondary categories.
2. Fresh, real photos. Profiles with recent photos tend to get more clicks and direction requests. Add a few real photos every week: finished jobs, your team, your storefront, your products. Skip stock images.
3. A steady stream of reviews. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy: share the direct review link from your profile by text or email right after the job. A steady trickle beats a burst of reviews once a year.
4. Reply to every review. Thank people for good reviews and respond calmly and helpfully to bad ones. Future customers read your replies, and it shows the business is active.
5. Weekly posts. Use Updates to share an offer, a recent project, or seasonal tip. It keeps the profile looking alive and gives searchers one more reason to click.
Bonus: make sure your name, address and phone number match exactly on your website, your profile and directories. Mismatches confuse Google.
