Halloween is the time of the year to get scared. However, what happens to the people who want to get into the spirit of Halloween but are scaredy-cats? To help you out, here are 5 “horror” movies that aren’t scary at all. Can a movie be considered part of the “horror” genre if it isn’t even scary? I don’t know, but it’s my list, so I’m going to do what I want.

5 Halloween Horror Movies That Aren’t Scary

  1. The Final Girls
  2. Hell of a Summer
  3. Totally Killer
  4. Freaky
  5. Ready or Not

1. The Final Girls

We all think that if we were stuck in a horror film, we would have enough wherewithal to escape with our lives. But just because we know what’s coming next doesn’t mean we can avoid it, and that’s exactly what happens in The Final Girls.

A group of friends finds themselves stuck in an old-school slasher film, filled with the cliches from old slasher films that everyone knows and loves. They soon find that even though they’re stuck in a fictional world, the danger is very real. In order to leave the movie and return to their normal lives, they’ll have to beat the odds and kill the killer.

2. Hell of a Summer

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21267296/

Out of all the movies on this list, this is the one that made me laugh out loud the most. It follows a group of summer camp counselors as they are picked off one by one. If this sounds like a stereotypical slasher film, it’s because it is. But what makes this both fun and funny is that the movie doesn’t shy away from how stereotypical it is.

The movie is also engaging and interesting while also never taking itself too seriously. That’s a really fine line to walk, and it does so perfectly.

3. Totally Killer

If you like a little sci-fi in your slasher films, this is the one for you.

When a serial killer returns, a teenage girl will go back in time to the 80s to try to stop them during their first killing spree. It’s a time-traveling slasher movie; if that sentence alone doesn’t pique your interest, then don’t even bother watching the movie. But even still, I would encourage you to give Totally Killer a chance. It’s silly and wacky, but it’s also a nice movie about a mother and daughter’s relationship.

4. Freaky

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10919380/

Staying on this sci-fi trend, Freaky also takes the slasher film and flips it on its head. A serial killer inadvertently swaps bodies with a teenage girl. If that wasn’t bad enough, the body swap has the potential to become permanent, so it’s a race against time to try to stop that from happening.

Freaky stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, and it’s a treat to see them act out this insane premise. Vaughn playing a teenage girl who just wants her body back and Newton playing a sadistic serial killer who’s looking to kill anybody in his way is an absolute treat.

5. Ready or Not

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7798634/

I won’t go too into detail about what this movie is about because I think the less you know, the better. The one thing I will say is that the movie is about a newlywed bride whose wedding night goes off the rails. I know that’s not much to go on, but I promise that it’s worth it.

Samara Weaving is incredible in this movie, and I don’t think this film would’ve been half as good if it had another actress in the role. This is also a good time to mention that she’s also really good in the movie The Babysitter, which is a comedy horror that barely missed the cutoff for this list.

Conclusion

Even if you’re a scaredy-cat, you’re still allowed to enjoy Halloween and everything that comes with it. Some Halloween movies are made purely to scare you, and other movies are just made to give you a laugh and a thrill. If the latter sounds better to you, check out the movies on this list. You won’t be scared, and you won’t be disappointed either.
