Speed is one of the easiest wins for a small business website. Visitors on phones leave quickly when a page hangs, and Google uses page experience as a ranking signal. Here are the five fixes that make the biggest difference on the small sites I review.
1. Compress and resize images. The most common problem is a 4000px photo straight from a camera shown in a 600px box. Resize images to the size they're actually displayed at and compress them (Squoosh or TinyPNG work well).
2. Serve modern formats. WebP (or AVIF) images are usually much smaller than JPEG or PNG at the same quality. Most site builders and CDNs can convert automatically.
3. Remove unused plugins, apps and scripts. Every chat widget, slider, tracking pixel and plugin can add JavaScript to every page. Audit them and keep only what earns its place.
4. Lazy-load what's below the fold. Add loading="lazy" to images and embeds further down the page so the first screen loads first. Don't lazy-load your hero image.
5. Use fast, simple hosting. Cheap shared hosting is often the bottleneck. A static or edge-hosted site with a CDN is fast and usually inexpensive.
How to check: run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, fix the top suggestions, and test again.
