Some gifts are opened, admired and set aside. A well-made helmet is different: it is chosen with care, worn on every ride, and trusted for years.

Why a helmet makes a lasting gift

A helmet is personal in a way little else a rider owns is. It is fitted to one head, shaped around one way of riding, and it goes everywhere its owner goes. Giving one well says you have paid attention.

It is also the most consequential piece of kit. The evidence is clear: a Cochrane review on helmets and head injury found that helmets substantially reduce the risk of head injury and death. A gift that protects is a gift that lasts.

What to look for

  • Certification to ECE 22.06. It is worth understanding the new ECE 22.06 standard, which tests a wider range of impacts than its predecessor. Independent SHARP helmet ratings are a useful second reference.
  • Shell materials. Composite and fibreglass shells offer strength without unnecessary weight.
  • A leather-lined interior. Comfortable over long rides, and it ages well.
  • Fit. Snug and even, with no pressure points. Size matters more than style.
  • A considered finish. Paint, stitching and hardware should feel deliberate, not decorative.

A helmet is the one piece of kit every rider wears every ride. That is what makes it worth giving well.
