Hey All!

Wanted to share something I built over the weekend just for fun. I was thinking it would be fun to play a retro cyberpunk game that takes place in an alt 90s. Imagine the kind of hacking described in Shadowrun, Hackers, The Net, etc. but level set to 1990s technology and have it based on real world systems of the time.

The game is a TUI that has simulates dialing up to a BBS, where you can read messages, hack into servers and navigate mazes and security programs to collect clues. Once the challenge is cleared you can Goodbye from the server. But instead of exiting, you travel down into successive layers of different boards while tracing clues to find your missing sister.

I also tried to incorporate some of the ezine ascii art I used to remember on some of the sites back then. There are some glitch effects and scenes that leverage it.

Overall, this was a lot of fun to put together. I designed it to allow for configuration, from connecting a model to generate levels to defining your own “level packs” with the seed story defined. So it is intended to be a framework for building games in this style.

Feel free to give it a try and let me know what you think. I plan to refine this a bit more and actually put together a coherent story with multiple endings.
