Apple Intelligence Finally Lands in China — Powered by Alibaba's Qwen

Two years after launching in the US, Apple Intelligence is coming to iPhones in mainland China. Announced 31 October 2026 by Alibaba and Apple's China newsroom, the deal plugs Alibaba's Qwen models into Apple Intelligence — the first time Apple has built a local AI company's models into its core system AI. Testing starts 4 November in the latest iOS developer beta, with the public rollout arriving with iOS 27.3 in December.

Where Qwen shows up

Qwen isn't a separate app — it lives inside three iPhone features:

  • Siri — for certain requests, Siri calls on Qwen's broader knowledge to answer directly, and you can ask it about selected photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations.
  • Writing Tools — system-wide, plus a new "Compose with Qwen" option that generates original text and images from a prompt anywhere in the OS.
  • Visual Intelligence — the camera feature gains Qwen's image understanding.

The slot is the same one ChatGPT occupies for Siri users outside China: Apple is running a multi-partner AI strategy, and China gets a different engine.

Privacy guardrails

This part is stronger than most AI apps' defaults:

  • Opt-in — enable it yourself; sign in with a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple.
  • Permission per item — Apple says you're asked before any question, document or image is sent to Qwen.
  • No training on your data — Alibaba confirmed requests and responses through the integration won't train its models.

Who gets it

It's narrower than a normal iOS update: you need an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone purchased in China, or both your device location and Apple Account country/region set to China. Devices: iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo, with device and Siri language in English or Simplified Chinese.

The honest caveats

Apple has been blunt: Siri AI (the rebuilt assistant that arrived with iOS 27 elsewhere) is not included, and neither are the other next-generation features announced at WWDC 2026. China gets the established Apple Intelligence set — notification summaries, Genmoji, Photos Clean Up, writing tools — with Qwen doing the heavy lifting.

Why it took two years

Regulation, not technology. China's rules require generative AI services to be registered by the cyberspace regulator — Apple Intelligence cleared that in July 2026 — and foreign models don't get approved for system-level use, so Apple needed a domestic model partner. Bloomberg has also reported the guardrails include a mechanism for regulators to approve ongoing model updates.

Why it matters to everyone else

Apple is now definitively multi-model: on-device models, ChatGPT outside China, Gemini helping the new Siri, and Qwen in China. If you travel to China on a foreign Apple Account, eligibility follows your purchase and account regions — not GPS — so you won't see Qwen features. And for the industry, a Qwen embedded in hundreds of millions of iPhones raises the stakes for every frontier model in the race.
