Apple opened Siri AI integration to all developers in software previews released November 3, allowing apps to add actions and multi-step skills ahead of customer access expected in coming months.
The developer preview is available through iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas. Apple says the new capabilities let apps bring their content and actions directly into Siri, including through personal context understanding, onscreen awareness and natural-language requests.
Developers use Apple’s App Intents system to expose what their apps can do. That could let someone ask Siri to check a delivery, book a reservation or place an order without navigating through the app’s menus. Apple says users can make requests in their own words, and its documentation says a person may not need to name an app when it is already in the foreground, running a Live Activity or part of the conversation with Siri.
A new feature called skills lets developers combine several app actions into one experience. Apple’s example describes a user requesting a ride, following the ride’s Live Activity while waiting, then asking Siri to change the pickup address. The company also says Siri can surface any entity in the Spotlight semantic index, rather than only items that fit an existing schema.
Apple is extending the capabilities to its own apps as well. The company named Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts and Weather. It says users can ask Siri to find a coffee shop they visited the previous week or archive files that have not been opened in more than a year.
The preview gives developers an early period to build and test their integrations. Apple says it expects to begin accepting App Store submissions using the capabilities in spring, with the first customer releases expected in a few months. The company said it plans to provide terms and usage policies for Siri AI-enabled experiences later.
Availability remains limited by language, region and device eligibility. Apple lists English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish as supported languages, with Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese planned for expansion. The assistant requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language, and Apple says some features may not be available in every region or language.
Apple says Siri AI is currently unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, while it works with the EU to find a path forward. The assistant is also unavailable to users under 13. Apple notes that certain features relying on server-side models, including Siri AI, have daily usage limits.
The opening to developers follows a much narrower history of third-party Siri access. The Register reported that Apple added limited app access in 2016 and made Siri an interface for Apple Intelligence in 2024. It also noted that several advertised Siri capabilities were delayed, and that Apple faced a 2025 lawsuit alleging misleading marketing over those capabilities.
Roberto Gutierrez, an Apple platforms staff engineer at a media company, told The Register that the expanded system is a meaningful change because it can understand context and chain actions across apps. He also cautioned that developers must expose their app’s functions through App Intents for Siri to use them. “Siri can only do what apps expose through App Intents, and SiriKit is on its way out,” he said.
