My Journey with JavaScript: Learning Through a School Management System
Learning a new programming language can feel like standing at the base of a steep mountain. When I started with JavaScript, I knew I needed a project that was both practical and simple enough to understand the core foundations. That’s how I decided to build a basic School Management System.
The very first step was tracking student performance. I began by defining marks for five different subjects. From there, I moved on to calculating the total, calculating the average score, and even determining the final grade and percentage. This logical flow helped me see how data can be processed step-by-step.
One of the most interesting things I learned was how JavaScript handles operators. Coming from a background where I wasn't sure how equality worked, I was surprised to find that the single = is actually an assignment operator, while the double == is used for comparison. Understanding these subtle details made the logic much clearer and opened the door to more advanced concepts. Building this simple system was the perfect first step in my developer journey.
`javascript
let tamil=100; let english=100; let mat=100; let science=100; let sociels=95; // findresult function findresult() { if (tamil>=35){ if (english>=35){ if (mat>=35){ if(science>=35){ if(sociels>=35){ console.log("pass"); return "pass"; } } } } } } // finding total function findtotal() { let total= tamil + english + mat + science + sociels; console.log(total); return "total"; } // finding avg function findavg(total) { let avg = total / 5; console.log(avg); return "avg"; } // find grade function findgrade(avg) { if (avg>=90) { console.log("a"); } else if(avg>=80) { console.log("b"); } else if (avg>=70) { console.log("c"); } else { console.log("d"); } } // calling function let result = findresult(); if (result == "pass"){ let total = findtotal(); let avg = findavg(total); let grade = findgrade(avg); } `
