This morning I read an article about Flock cameras in Atlanta, so i started wondering if light could be used to interact with a camera backwards into a digital system?
What I was actually thinking - "How would someone shut down a surveillance camera?"
Optical Cyber Intrusion. Whoa.
Then I started spitballing (thats about my tech level on this topic. OK, fair. Any tech topic.)
Evidently, light can be used to communicate with digital systems. I found a bit of research, like a 2019 paper called aIR-Jumper, which showed communication with air-gapped systems through infrared signals and surveillance cameras.
The next "obvious" question I wondered about was - could light be used as a way to cyberattack? Could an optical signal of some sort be used to disrupt or compromise surveillance cameras or other another connected device? I mean there are so many sites with surveillance sytems, I would imagine theyre all connected into the the company or site network.
Anyone working in optical communications, embedded security, camera systems, or related fields have any insight?
