Implementation summary

This article treats scroll snapping as a three-part contract so you can diagnose failures precisely. The helper accepts a container styles object and an array of child style objects and returns a small structured result: ok, issues, and fixes. It checks four things in order: whether the container opted in with scroll-snap-type, whether the declared axis corresponds to the actual motion, whether children expose scroll-snap-align values the browser can land on, and whether the strictness is proximity (soft) instead of mandatory (hard).

Expected behavior

  • If no scroll-snap-type is present, the helper reports the container was not opted in and suggests adding scroll-snap-type (for example: "scroll-snap-type: x mandatory").
  • If children lack scroll-snap-align, it reports missing snap targets and suggests adding alignment on the snapping items.
  • If the container axis (x/y/inline/block/both) does not line up with the child alignments, it reports an axis mismatch and suggests changing the axis to match the movement you intend.
  • If the strictness is proximity, it reports that the contract is permissive and suggests switching to mandatory when you need guaranteed landings.

Limitations and scope

  • The helper is a heuristic that inspects declaration relationships. It is intentionally small and does not attempt to parse every possible CSS keyword or emulate browser input physics.
  • It verifies only the declarations you control; it does not model momentum, pointer input, exact snapping physics, or whether the browser will ultimately choose a specific landing position in a complex layout.
  • Logical axis shifts (inline/block) from writing-mode changes, multi-value align declarations, and other nuanced behaviors are not exhaustively modeled.

Why this helps

When a scroll snap demo “doesn’t work,” it often means different things. This diagnostic order — container opt-in, axis, children, strictness — maps to the actual repair you should try first. That reduces trial-and-error and prevents fixes that look plausible (e.g., adding container-type or forcing mandatory) but don’t address the root cause.

The server will insert the verified implementation example below. It includes the small diagnosis function and a few unit tests that show the expected outputs for the common failure modes described above.

Working example

export function diagnoseSnap(containerStyles = {}, childrenStyles = []) { const result = { ok: false, issues: [], fixes: [] }; const rawType = String(containerStyles.scrollSnapType ?? 'none').trim(); if (!rawType || rawType === 'none') { result.issues.push('container-not-opted-in'); result.fixes.push('Add scroll-snap-type on the scroll container, for example: "scroll-snap-type: x mandatory".'); return result; } const [axisToken = 'none', strictnessToken] = rawType.split(/\s+/); const axis = axisToken; const strictness = strictnessToken ?? 'proximity'; const parsedChildren = childrenStyles .map((child) => { const rawAlign = String(child?.scrollSnapAlign ?? '').trim(); if (!rawAlign) return null; const parts = rawAlign.split(/\s+/).filter(Boolean); return parts.length === 1 ? { rawAlign, parts, block: parts[0], inline: parts[0] } : { rawAlign, parts, block: parts[0], inline: parts[1] }; }) .filter(Boolean); if (parsedChildren.length === 0) { result.issues.push('missing-snap-align'); result.fixes.push('Add scroll-snap-align on the snapping children, for example: "scroll-snap-align: center;".'); } const hasAxisMatch = parsedChildren.some((child) => { if (axis === 'both') return child.block !== 'auto' || child.inline !== 'auto'; if (axis === 'x' || axis === 'inline') return child.parts.length === 1 && ['start', 'center', 'end'].includes(child.inline); if (axis === 'y' || axis === 'block') return ['start', 'center', 'end'].includes(child.block); return false; }); if (parsedChildren.length > 0 && !hasAxisMatch) { result.issues.push('axis-mismatch'); result.fixes.push(`Change the container axis to match the movement you want; the current value "${axis}" does not line up with the child alignments.`); } if (strictness === 'proximity') { result.issues.push('proximity-strictness'); result.fixes.push('If you need a guaranteed landing, use "mandatory" instead of "proximity".'); } if (result.issues.length === 0) { result.ok = true; result.message = 'snapping-should-work'; } return result; }
