Diagnosing Bufferbloat and Asymmetric Routing in Remote Work Environments
0 views

When setting up stable remote work environments, bandwidth is rarely the bottleneck; latency under load is. This phenomenon, known as bufferbloat, occurs when a router's unmanaged queues fill up with large packets, severely delaying critical VoIP or SSH traffic.
As a Lead Technician managing deployments across Berkshire IT Services, I regularly encounter Gigabit connections that feel like dial-up during Zoom calls due to severe asymmetric routing and unmanaged ISP buffers.
The Diagnostic
To identify bufferbloat, you cannot rely on a standard speed test. You must measure ICMP ping variance while the connection is completely saturated.
# Saturated Ping Test
ping 8.8.8.8 -t
If your baseline 12ms ping spikes to 300ms+ during a large upload, your router is buffering aggressively. You can also verify this using the Waveform Bufferbloat Test or reading the Bufferbloat Project documentation.
The Solution: SQM (Smart Queue Management)
The fix requires abandoning ISP-provided hardware and deploying a gateway capable of fq_codel or CAKE (Common Applications Kept Enhanced). By artificially capping the connection speed to 95% of its maximum throughput, we prevent the ISP buffers from ever filling up, shifting queue management to our own gateway where traffic is properly prioritized.
If you are dealing with structural interference alongside these latency issues, refer back to my previous playbook on Navigating Wi-Fi Dead Zones in Victorian-Era Homes.
