Two kinds of junior devs right now, and only one of them is actually learning
0 views

I've been watching a lot of beginners lately, and I keep seeing the same thing. Someone asks ChatGPT/Claude a question and gets an answer, after sees it works - and that's it... they move on :( Then a new problem comes up, and they do the same thing again. And I get it, I really do. It's fast, it's easy, and I use AI every day too. But after a while, you start to see a difference, there's a BIG gap between just getting an answer and actually learning. Some beginners are different, though. They get the code, and then they start asking questions like: Why does this work? What happens if I change this part? Do I really need this line? Sometimes they break code and sit there trying to figure out why. And I really like that! It looks slower, yeah, but I that's where the real learning happens! Do not get me wrong, you don't need to stop using AI. And trying to do everything by hand doesn't really make sense now. Just don't stop at the answer. Play with it a bit, you need to ask questions, change code and see what breaks/happnes and try to understand what's really going on. If you keep doing that, AI can make you a better developer, and much faster - instead of just giving you code that works. Curious if other people who teach or mentor beginners have seen the same thing 🤔
