Your Reputation Is Built From Small Promises
0 views

People think reputation
is made of big moments.
The rescue.
The outage you fixed at midnight.
The demo that landed.
It is not.
It is made of the sentence
you said on a Tuesday
and either did or did not do.
"I will send you that link."
"I will look at it this afternoon."
"I will let you know either way
by Thursday."
Nobody writes those down.
Everybody remembers them.
Not consciously,
not as a list,
but as a feeling that settles
after about the fifth one.
He said he would, so it is handled.
Or: he said he would,
so I had better check.
That second sentence
is the expensive one,
and you never hear anyone say it.
You just notice, years later,
that certain work
keeps going to certain people.
The trap is that small promises
are cheap to make.
They cost nothing at the moment of speaking.
You say yes because saying yes
is warmer than saying no,
and the cost lands
three days later
on a version of you
who has a full week
and no memory of the conversation.
So make fewer of them.
Say the honest thing in the room.
"I cannot get to that this week."
"Ask me again Monday
and I will have an answer."
"I do not want to promise
something I will not do."
Nobody has ever resented that.
People resent silence
and the quiet non delivery
that follows it.
And when you do give your word,
put it somewhere outside your head
before you leave the conversation.
Memory is not a system.
Then there is the recovery,
which matters more
than the original promise.
When you are going to miss it,
say so before the deadline,
not after,
and say when instead.
That is the whole thing.
Being trusted is not a personality.
It is a hundred small sentences
that turned out to be true.
