Fedora Linux 45 has officially landed after two postponements, bringing GNOME 51, KDE Plasma 6.8.2 with Wayland defaults, stricter RPM signature enforcement, and a massive set of upgraded developer toolchains including Python 3.15, GCC 16.2, and Podman 6.

What's changing on desktops

The base version with GNOME 51 offers smoother gestures, faster screen capture, and better display management. The settings app supports auto-rotation, remembers brightness levels, and can disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected.

The Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop edition features KDE Plasma 6.8.2, which brings separate virtual desktops for each display. It also stops using the old X11 desktop sessions, with the system permanently switching to the Wayland environment.

Security and system management

In terms of security, Fedora 45 now enforces digital signature checking for software packages by default and restricts debugging privileges for regular users. Behind the scenes, the traditional kernel console has been replaced by kmscon, while secret data management is now handled through a new system written in Rust.

Installation and programming tools

The system installer now supports installation to storage managed by Stratis, while Atomic Desktop variants are moving to a newer web-based installation environment and supporting secure remote installation via browser.
