Firefox 158 is out with native JPEG XL image support, CSS typed arithmetic in calc, WebAuthn conditional UI updates, and navigation options for notifications.
This image format supports wider color gamut, high dynamic range, video and animation, as well as options for high-quality lossless images and progressive loading. Mozilla has been testing this feature for several months, initially allowing users to enable it in a trial version through a special settings page.
New features and improvements
The program's artificial intelligence feature for navigation can now automatically fill in fields in forms by drawing information from other open tabs or from saved fill-in data.
In the area of privacy-friendly local translations, support for three new languages has been added: Albanian, Belarusian, and Filipino. A display issue with small icons on web pages when using the Ubuntu operating system has also been fixed.
Creating PDFs within the program now produces more accessible documents, and display issues that caused mathematical symbols to disappear have been resolved. Scrolling through web pages is smoother and more accurate, as the program no longer rounds scroll positions to the exact pixels of the screen.
On the new tab page, custom wallpapers that users have been using are now grouped into a separate images folder. The new version also includes changes for web developers, as well as a number of security fixes.
Availability and update
Installers are available from Monday, October 12th via Mozilla's archive service. Automatic updates for existing Windows, macOS, and Linux users began rolling out on Tuesday, October 13th, with Linux distribution repositories and app stores expected to roll out gradually thereafter.
