Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts That Actually Speed Up Your Workflow

Most Firefox shortcut guides cover Ctrl+T (new tab) and Ctrl+W (close tab). Here are the ones that aren't obvious but save real time once you know them.

Address Bar Shortcuts

Ctrl+L — Jump to address bar. Works from anywhere, instantly. Type a URL, a search term, or a page title.

Alt+Enter — Open the current address bar content in a new tab instead of the current one. Type a URL in the bar, press Alt+Enter to open it without leaving your current tab.

Ctrl+K — Focus address bar but specifically for search (using your default search engine). Same as Ctrl+L but skips URL-detection.

`` (Space) in the address bar — Type a keyword before your search query to use a specific search engine. Go to Preferences → Search → Keywords to set these up. Example: typing g search term can search Google while d search term searches DuckDuckGo.

Tab Navigation

Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab — Cycle through tabs in order.

Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+8 — Jump directly to tab 1-8 by position.

Ctrl+9 — Jump to the last tab, regardless of how many tabs you have open.

Ctrl+Shift+T — Reopen the last closed tab. Press multiple times to reopen multiple closed tabs in order.

Ctrl+Shift+N — New window (not private). Useful for separating contexts without extensions.

Page Navigation

F6 or Ctrl+L — Both focus the address bar. F6 is sometimes faster to hit single-handed.

Space / Shift+Space — Scroll down/up a page at a time. Faster than scroll wheel for long pages.

/ — Find as you type. Start typing a word without any dialog box; Firefox highlights matches in real time. Press Esc to exit. Alternative to Ctrl+F.

' (apostrophe) — Like / but only searches links on the page. Type part of a link's text, press Enter to follow it. Keyboard-only navigation for power users.

Reader View

F9 — Toggle reader view. Strips the page to text and images. Works on most articles; reader icon appears in the address bar when Firefox detects it's supported.

In reader view:

  • ←/→ arrow keys: previous/next article (if Firefox tracks the sequence)
  • You can change font, size, and background color (including dark mode) from the reader view toolbar

Developer Tools (Also Useful for Non-Developers)

Ctrl+Shift+I — Open Developer Tools. Even if you don't write code, the Network tab shows you every resource a page loads — useful for spotting trackers or heavy assets.

Ctrl+Shift+K — Browser Console. Shows JavaScript errors on the current page, which can explain why something isn't working.

F12 — Toggle Developer Tools (same as Ctrl+Shift+I, just single-key).

Private Browsing

Ctrl+Shift+P — New private window. Private browsing in Firefox is more thorough than Chrome's incognito — it also blocks fingerprinting and tracking by default (in Enhanced Tracking Protection mode).

The ones I use most often in practice: Ctrl+L (address bar), Alt+Enter (open in new tab), Ctrl+Shift+T (reopen closed tab), and F9 (reader view). These four alone remove enough friction that they're worth memorizing.
