I kept thinking I needed to learn one more framework before I could charge anyone. I didn't. What I was missing was embarrassingly unglamorous:

  1. A live portfolio (not a GitHub graveyard — a real URL a business owner can open on their phone)
  2. A daily outreach habit with scripts that don't sound like spam
  3. A one-page fixed-price proposal, so I never quoted hourly on a call again

Here's the outreach math nobody tells you: 100 personalised messages -> 10-20 replies -> 3-5 calls -> 1-2 paid projects. That isn't failure, that's the funnel working. Most people quit at message 12.

The 3 rules that changed everything for me:

  • Personalise the first line or don't send it. 20 real messages beat 200 blasts.
  • Fixed price, 50% to start, 7-day expiry on every proposal.
  • Follow up on day 3, 7 and 14. Most replies live in the follow-ups.

I turned the whole system — my portfolio template (edit one config file, drag to Netlify, live), all 15 outreach scripts, the 30-day plan, proposal/invoice/discovery-call templates — into a kit. There's a free sample with 3 scripts + my onboarding checklist here: https://payhip.com/b/uYaL0

Happy to answer questions about the outreach math in the comments — that part's all free above.
