From Model Call to Computer-Use Agent: Keep the Gateway Simple and the Execution Explicit

The latest model releases are making computer use a normal engineering topic. Google marked its Computer Use tool generally available on October 30. OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26 with visual reasoning and computer-use capabilities. Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4 on October 29. These announcements expand what developers can evaluate, but they do not remove the need for an application architecture that is easy to inspect.

RelayRouter is useful at the model connection layer. For supported routes in the current catalog, a developer can keep one server-side integration pattern, select an available model identifier, and run the same evaluation contract. Computer use belongs to a separate execution layer that controls permissions, confirmation, browser state, logs, and fallback.

Start with one route and one observable task

Do not begin with operating our back office. Begin with a task that has a visible start and finish. A safe first example is opening a staging product record, reading three approved fields, and preparing a proposed edit without clicking Publish.

Create a RelayRouter account, inspect the current catalog, and copy the documented Base URL and model identifier. Do not infer route support from a model announcement. A provider may expose computer use through a native tool, a different API shape, or a product-specific runtime.

The common request can stay small. Use the selected model ID, a system instruction that asks for one proposed action, and a bounded staging task. A proposal does not grant permission to control a browser.

Add computer use as a separate execution loop

Task -> model request through RelayRouter -> proposed action -> normalized action envelope -> policy check -> user confirmation when required -> browser execution -> screenshot and result -> next model request.

If the model returned malformed output, that is a model adapter problem. If a click hit the wrong coordinate, that is an executor problem. If a destructive action ran without confirmation, that is a policy problem.

Preserve capability checks

One gateway does not mean every model can be swapped blindly. Before changing a route, check visual input, computer-use or tool support, structured outputs, streaming, context, rate limits, and pricing for that exact model and endpoint. A text-only fallback cannot continue a screenshot-driven loop merely because it accepts the same message format.

RelayRouter reduces repeated connection work for supported routes. Your adapter still has to preserve the differences that matter.

Validate actions before executing them

Never pass a raw provider response directly to Playwright, Selenium, or a desktop automation tool. Convert it into an internal action envelope with task ID, action, typed arguments, intent, risk, and a requires_confirmation flag. Validate the action name and argument types. Enforce a domain allowlist and step limit. Block password fields and sensitive destinations. Require confirmation for submitting forms, purchases, account changes, external messages, and publishing.

The model proposes. The client decides whether the proposal is allowed.

Build fallback around task stages

Fallback is a routing policy, not a generic exception handler. A failed planning request may be safe to retry on another compatible model. A browser action may have partially completed, so the application must inspect the latest screenshot and reconcile state before asking another model to continue. Never repeat a side effect only because a timeout occurred.

Capability-aware fallback should answer three questions: can the alternate route understand the current observation, return the required action shape, and continue without losing safety or business context? If any answer is no, stop and ask for review.

Compare models with the same evaluation contract

Keep the staging page, instructions, step limit, and acceptance rules identical. Measure whether the agent selected the correct record, edited only allowed fields, required confirmation at the right boundary, and produced a trace another person can follow. Compare routes inside the same client and the same task.

A practical first build

Use a local or staging page with synthetic data. Give the agent one read-only objective. Then permit a draft edit and stop before Submit. Save every proposal, policy decision, screenshot, and result. Once this loop is understandable, add another supported route and run the same case.

RelayRouter makes the connection layer easier to reuse. Your action envelope, executor, confirmation rules, and audit trail make computer use safe enough to improve.
