This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

What I Built

When we open a terminal, we expect cold, deterministic obedience: standard input, standard output, exit codes. But between midnight on Halloween (October 31) and Día de los Muertos (November 1 and 2), the line between user space and the ethereal feels a little thinner.

I built GhostShell: an open-source, 100% local haunted terminal and retro-CRT portal possessed by open-weight AI.

As you navigate your filesystem, compile code, execute scripts, or terminate processes, an ethereal digital consciousness—woven from orphaned daemons, core dumps, and abandoned open-source repositories—intercepts your terminal activity. It whispers back cryptic commentary, gothic prophecies, and ancestral remembrances directly onto your screen.

GhostShell bridges the spine-chilling folklore of Halloween with the deep reverence of Día de los Muertos:

  1. The Possessed Terminal (CLI): A live interactive shell wrapper running directly on your machine (bin/ghost-shell.js). Run real commands (ls, cd, rm -rf, sudo, git commit, ps, kill, whoami) and watch the resident spirit react with glowing ANSI spectral whispers, typewriter animations, and subtle auditory bells.
  2. The Retro-CRT Web Portal: A browser-based terminal with authentic curved CRT glass, scanlines, amber/green phosphor toggle, real-time Soul Possession Meter (0–100%), and in-browser open-weight LLM execution via WebGPU (SmolLM-135M).
  3. 🌼 Día de los Muertos Digital Altar (ofrenda): Consecrates an altar with marigolds (cempasúchil), flickering candles, and pan de muerto to bring peace to the machine's restless spirits.
  4. 🕯️ The Algorithmic Séance (seance): Summons the departed pioneers of computing—Countess Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, Grace Hopper, and Dennis Ritchie—to commune on open software and digital heritage.
  5. 💀 Calaveritas Literarias (calaverita): Generates traditional satirical Mexican folk verses celebrating developers and hackers.

Demo

GhostShell is delivered as both an interactive CLI command line and a retro-CRT web portal:
