Day 23 of 30 Days of Search.

TL;DR

To integrate deep research into an AI agent, expose two backend tools: one to start an approved research task, and another to retrieve its status and results. With Valyu DeepResearch, your application submits a brief, saves the returned deepresearch_id, and later retrieves a cited report with its source records.

In this tutorial, we build that integration in TypeScript using the Vercel AI SDK. The agent researches a real engineering decision: whether to use PostgreSQL or Elasticsearch for support-ticket search. Application code controls the brief, spending approval and task identity. The model receives the research results, but it cannot silently change the research budget or start a second investigation.

Your agent can write the code. Can it research the decision?

Your team wants search inside a support dashboard. You already run PostgreSQL. Someone suggests adding Elasticsearch because users need keyword search, typo tolerance and filters.

A coding agent can produce an implementation for either option. That does not settle the decision.

Before adding another service, you want to know:

  • Which requirements can the existing database meet, and which need extensions or application logic?
  • What operational work would a separate search service introduce?
  • What should you measure against your own ticket data before choosing?

Those questions require reading documentation, comparing capabilities, identifying versions and separating evidence from assumptions. A confident recommendation from the model's memory is not enough.

We will give the agent a research tool that produces a cited decision brief. The next action is to test the alternatives on a representative workload. The useful outcome is a better-supported engineering decision, not an automatically approved architecture change.

What is a deep research tool for an AI agent?

A deep research tool lets an agent delegate a scoped investigation rather than issue every search and assemble the report itself. Valyu DeepResearch accepts the research question, investigation instructions and desired report structure. It runs the task in the background and returns a report with citations and source records when complete.

Valyu supports research across the web and specialist sources such as papers, filings, trials and patents, subject to source availability and account access. This tutorial uses web research restricted to PostgreSQL and Elastic domains, not a specialist dataset subscription.

There are two agents in this arrangement:

Component Responsibility
Your host agent Understand the user's workflow, invoke the approved research tool and use the returned evidence
Valyu DeepResearch Investigate the brief and produce the research output
Your application code Own approval, credentials, task state and access to results
The engineering team Review the evidence, run workload tests and make the decision

The user approves a brief and credit budget. The host agent starts research, the application saves the task ID, and Valyu researches in the background. A later status tool returns the report and sources for human review.

Starting research and collecting its result are separate agent actions. Application code owns approval and task state.

When should you use DeepResearch instead of Search?

Use Valyu Search when your own agent should control the individual queries and reason over retrieved passages. Use DeepResearch when you want to delegate a research job and receive a synthesized output. Neither choice is automatically cheaper or better for every workload.

Your agent needs... Choose... Why
Evidence for one step in its existing reasoning loop Search API Your agent keeps control of retrieval and synthesis
Text from a URL it already has Contents API The source is known; discovery is not the job
A short cited answer to a focused question DeepResearch instant A smaller research job without file deliverables
A comparison, investigation or cited report DeepResearch fast, standard, heavy or max Delegate the research rather than rebuilding its orchestration

For the PostgreSQL-versus-Elasticsearch brief, we use fast to demonstrate a narrowly scoped integration. Evaluate its output before deciding whether a larger research budget is justified.

Step 1: define the brief your agent is allowed to submit

A useful research brief says what decision you are making, where to look and what to return. These are separate REST fields:

Field What we specify
query Compare the two options for a support-ticket search feature, with our existing PostgreSQL deployment as context
research_strategy Prefer official documentation, identify versions, separate built-in features from extensions, and do not invent benchmarks
report_format A feature comparison, operational trade-offs, missing information and a workload evaluation plan
search Web search restricted to postgresql.org and elastic.co
mode Explicitly fast; do not let the model choose a more expensive mode

The full brief appears in BRIEF in the script below. Restricting the source domains narrows the evidence base; it does not guarantee that every relevant page is retrieved or that every claim is correct.

The tools deliberately take no model-supplied arguments. The application already knows the approved brief and current task, so there is no reason for the model to invent a query, spending approval or task ID.

In a multi-user application, bind these values to an authenticated user's approved request instead of a single local job.

Step 2: set up the TypeScript project

Use Node.js 24.2 or later. This example uses Node's native TypeScript execution and was checked on Node.js 24.12.0.

mkdir deep-research-agent cd deep-research-agent npm init -y npm pkg set type=module npm install ai@7.0.143 @ai-sdk/openai@4.0.96 zod@4.6.7

Before adding credentials, put these entries in .gitignore:

node_modules/ .env* .research/ *.pem *.key credentials.* secrets.*

Get a Valyu key from platform.valyu.ai. Add it and your host-model configuration to .env.local:

VALYU_API_KEY=your-valyu-api-key OPENAI_API_KEY=your-openai-api-key OPENAI_MODEL=your-tool-capable-openai-model-id

Replace the three placeholders. Choose an OpenAI model available to your account that supports function calling through the Responses API. Valyu itself is model-agnostic; the OpenAI provider is simply the host-model integration used here.

Keep keys server-side. Do not paste them into browser code, the article or source control. The research brief must also be appropriate to send to the services involved; this example contains no private tickets or customer data.

Step 3: add the research tools and agent loop

Save this complete script as research-agent.ts.

The important division is between start_deep_research and get_deep_research_status. Starting returns control after task creation. Checking retrieves that existing task once, rather than waiting inside the conversation for the entire investigation.

We call the Valyu REST endpoints with fetch, so the example uses REST's snake_case field names directly. If you use valyu-js instead, follow its TypeScript SDK reference for camelCase option names.
