You open YouTube to find out how to put a chain back on your bike. The video is eleven minutes long. Forty minutes later you're on a Short about a dog that opens the fridge, and the bike is still upside down in the hallway.
If that's why you're searching for a way to put a time limit on YouTube, this post goes through what YouTube actually offers, what each setting does when the time is up, and what it takes to be stopped for real.
A quick note first: I'm Ayumu Kitabayashi, and I'm the developer of minulo, an iPhone app that opens YouTube, Instagram and TikTok with Shorts, Reels and similar feeds hidden. I mention it near the end, together with what it can't do. The facts about YouTube and iPhone settings below come from YouTube Help and Apple Support, checked on 2026-10-24. Menu names can change with app updates.
The short answer
I couldn't find a daily time limit in YouTube's help that locks you out of your own account. What YouTube has are reminders: Remind me to take a break, Remind me when it's bedtime and the Shorts feed limit. You can dismiss each one and keep watching.
If you want to be stopped at a set time, the limit has to come from the iPhone itself, through Screen Time with Block at End of Limit turned on and a passcode that someone else holds.
(Supervised accounts for kids and teens have separate controls run by a parent. This post is about your own account.)
Everything you can use, side by side
| Method | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Remind me to take a break (Settings › General) | Pauses your video after the interval you choose. | One tap and you keep watching. Phones only. |
| Remind me when it's bedtime (Settings › General) | Shows a reminder between the times you set. | Close it or snooze for 15 minutes. iPhone only. |
| Shorts feed limit (Settings › Time management) | A reminder after the time you pick in the Shorts feed. 0 is an option. | You can dismiss or ignore it. |
| Time management tab | Today, yesterday, the past 7 days and your daily average. | Numbers only. Needs watch history on. |
| iPhone Screen Time | Blocks the YouTube app when your time is up. | Blocks the whole app. youtube.com in Safari is separate. |
| minulo (free) | Opens YouTube with Shorts and Home recommendations hidden. Subscriptions stay. | The official YouTube app doesn't change, but minulo can lock it. |
Remind me to take a break
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Turn on Remind me to take a break.
- Choose a Reminder frequency and tap OK.
When the reminder comes up, your video pauses until you dismiss it. That's all it does. One tap and the video carries on.
YouTube's help also lists a few catches. The timer resets if you close the app, sign out, switch devices or pause a video for more than 30 minutes. It doesn't run for offline videos or while you're casting. And it's for phones only, not tablets.
According to YouTube's help, this reminder is on by default for users aged 13 to 17 and off for users 18 and over. If you want to turn it off, it's the same switch under Settings › General, or you can tap Change break reminder when a reminder appears.
Remind me when it's bedtime
- Tap your profile picture, then Settings and General.
- Turn on Remind me when it's bedtime.
- Pick a start and end time and tap OK.
If you'd rather finish the current video first, select Wait until I finish video to show reminder. When the reminder shows up, you can close it, or tap Remind Me Again to get another one in 15 minutes. YouTube says this works on iPhone, not iPad.
So at 11:30 pm you get a polite message, and at 11:45 pm you get the same polite message again.
The Shorts feed limit
Under Settings › Time management there's a limit just for the Shorts feed. You pick how long, and you can even set it to 0. When you reach it, YouTube shows a reminder that you can dismiss or ignore.
It's the closest thing YouTube has to "no Shorts", but it's still something you can tap past.
Check how much you actually watch
Before you set any limit, it helps to know the real number. Tap your profile picture, then the Time management tab. It shows how long you watched today, yesterday and over the past 7 days, plus your daily average.
The numbers come from your watch history. If watch history is paused, there are no numbers, and videos you removed from history aren't counted.
Making the limit stick with iPhone Screen Time
YouTube's own tools remind you. To be stopped, the limit has to come from the iPhone. On iOS 26:
- Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then App Limits and Add Limit.
- Select YouTube, tap Next and set the time. Tap Customize Days if you want different limits on school days.
- Set a Screen Time passcode with Lock Screen Time Settings.
- Open the YouTube limit again and turn on Block at End of Limit.
On iOS 27, Apple uses Time Allowances instead. They set time for a category of apps and also cover websites that an app declares as associated.
Two things to know:
- On iOS 26, youtube.com in Safari is separate. It needs its own entry under Never Allow in Content & Privacy Restrictions, or the website stays open when the app is blocked.
- A passcode you chose yourself can be typed in and the limit lifted. If you know the code, the block screen is one more thing to get past at midnight. It works best when someone else sets it.
Also keep in mind that Screen Time blocks the whole YouTube app. If you use YouTube for one cooking channel and a weekly podcast, those go too.
Hiding the part that takes the time
Going back to the bike chain: the eleven-minute video wasn't the problem. The time went into Shorts and the next recommendation. Instead of timing all of YouTube, you can remove those parts.
That's what minulo does. It's an iPhone app that opens YouTube's website inside the app, and you can hide these one at a time:
- Shorts
- Home recommendations
- All home recommendations (Home keeps only search)
- Comments
Subscriptions, Watch later and search open straight from the minulo home screen, so the videos you came for are still one tap away.
Hiding is free and has no time limit. minulo can also lock the official YouTube app with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block, and the block screen has an Open in minulo button. Schedules by day and time, blocks longer than 2 hours, Hard Mode and multiple block lists are in minulo Pro.
What minulo can't do
- No Android. minulo runs on iPhone and Mac only.
- The official YouTube app doesn't change. No third-party app can edit it. minulo shows YouTube's website inside its own app, with the parts you chose hidden. If you open the official app, Shorts are still there, which is why minulo can lock it.
- No notifications while the app is locked. While the official YouTube app is blocked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo doesn't send any of its own. Lock it only when you can miss them.
Which one should you use?
- You just want a nudge now and then: Remind me to take a break.
- Late nights are the problem: the bedtime reminder, knowing it can be snoozed.
- You want to be stopped and someone can hold the passcode: Screen Time with Block at End of Limit, plus youtube.com under Never Allow on iOS 26.
- You still want your subscriptions but not Shorts or recommendations: hide them in minulo for free.
