I build WordPress sites for small businesses, and this is the exact checklist I wish every first-time site owner followed before spending money. It was first published on my blog, Hosting Guide for Beginners.

Starting a website feels expensive and technical. It is not, if you do the steps in the right order.

Step 1: Decide what the site is for.

A blog, a portfolio, a small business page, or an online shop each need different things. Write one sentence: what is the site for, and who is it for?

Step 2: Choose a domain name.

Short, easy to spell, and easy to say out loud. Prefer .com if available. Avoid numbers and double letters. Check availability on your registrar or host before you fall in love with a name.

Step 3: Choose hosting — and read the renewal price.

Hosting is where your site lives. For a first WordPress site, shared hosting is the normal starting point. What matters is not the headline price, it is renewal price, support, backups, and a free SSL certificate. Make sure the plan includes free SSL (https), automatic backups, and a one-click WordPress installer. If a plan looks suspiciously cheap, read what it renews at.

Step 4: Install WordPress.

Most hosts offer one-click WordPress installation from their dashboard. After installing, log in at yoursite.com/wp-admin and check that your site loads over https.

Step 5: Set these 5 things on day one.

  1. Site title and tagline (Settings > General).
  2. Permalinks: choose "Post name" (Settings > Permalinks).
  3. Install a lightweight theme (Astra or Kadence are popular free options).
  4. Delete sample posts, pages and unused plugins.
  5. Install a backup plugin and a security plugin — one of each, not five.

Step 6: Publish your first three pages before your first post.

About, Contact, and Privacy. Readers and advertisers trust a site with real pages more than a site with only posts.

Step 7: Write for one reader.

Your first article should answer one question your one-sentence site exists to answer. Short paragraphs. One idea per heading. A clear title that matches what people search for.

Common beginner mistakes:

  • Buying the biggest plan first. Start small; you can upgrade.
  • Ignoring renewal prices. Your second term is the real cost of your site.
  • Installing 20 plugins in week one. Every plugin is code you must trust.
  • Waiting for a perfect design. A clean, fast, simple site beats a beautiful site that is never launched.

FAQ:

Q: How much does a first website really cost?
A: At minimum: hosting for 12 months plus a domain. Prices change often, so check the provider's official site for current pricing.

Q: Do I need coding to use WordPress?
A: No. Themes, the block editor and plugins cover a normal blog or business site without code.

Q: How long does setup take?
A: About 1-2 hours for steps 1-6 if your domain and payment are ready.
