I spent some time clicking through a few AI companion products to see what actually changes from one app to the next. These are notes, not a ranking and not a pitch.
What I looked at
I compared products on four things that show up in the first session:
- Memory. Does the chat remember a name or a preference after you leave, or does every visit start from zero?
- Persona control. Can you pick a style (short replies, role, tone) or is the voice fixed?
- Limits. Free message caps, image gates, or a paywall on the second reply.
- Privacy copy. What the settings and policy pages say about storing chats.
The differences were mostly in those four places, not in the model name on the homepage.
A few patterns
- Apps that lead with a character gallery tend to lock customization behind a subscription. The free path is often "talk to this preset."
- Apps that lead with a blank chat tend to forget context unless you stay in the same thread.
- Almost all of them blur "companion" and "roleplay." If you want a practical assistant, the companion framing gets in the way. If you want a character, a general chatbot can feel flat.
One I looked at more closely: Lovix
Lovix is one of the companion-style apps I opened while taking these notes. Affiliate disclosure: that link is an affiliate link. If you sign up through it, I may earn a commission. It does not change the price for you, and this post is not a claim that anyone earns income from these apps.
What stood out in the product itself was the flow: character-first, with a short onboarding before the chat. I did not run a long-term memory test, so I would not call it better or worse than the others on retention. Treat it as one data point.
Optional checklist
I keep the same four questions (memory, persona, limits, privacy) on a small public page, if you want the list without the writeup: https://inquisitive-donut-94cfc4.netlify.app
No signup is required to read it. If you have tried more than one of these apps, the useful comparison is still those four questions, not the line on the landing page.
