It’s easier to read than “AEO” jargon and creates curiosity. I’d use plain words in the post and explain AEO once, in simple terms.
1. Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile**
This is the single most important step, and the one most businesses skip halfway.
When AI tools suggest local businesses, they often show Google star ratings and review counts next to the names. That’s a sign the lists come from the same data you see on Google Maps. A missing or half-empty profile can keep you out of the running before anything else is even looked at.
Here’s what to fill in:
Your exact business name and category
Address, phone number and opening hours
A list of your services, written in plain words
Real photos of your shop, team or work
The areas you serve, like Mira Road, Bhayandar or Mumbai
Then keep it alive. Posts on your profile aren’t mainly there to get clicks. They show that your business is active and up to date. Even one small update a week helps.
Ask for reviews, and ask often
Think of reviews as word of mouth, written down. AI tools try to understand what real customers think of you, so they matter a lot.
Reviews from three years ago looks inactive, even if every review is glowing. Second, what the review says. Specific mentions of quality, service and results carry more weight than star ratings alone.
So after every happy job, send the customer your review link on WhatsApp and say something like: “If you liked our work, could you write a line about what we did for you?” A review that says “They fixed our leaking bathroom pipe in one visit” helps far more than “Good service.”
Never buy fake reviews. Platforms can spot them, and you’ll lose trust fast.Keep your business details the same everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should look exactly the same on your website, Google profile, Instagram, Facebook and every listing site.
It sounds small, but it matters. If one place says “Shop 4, Mira Road (E)” and another says “Mira Rd East, Shop No. 4,” the AI can get confused about whether they’re the same business. Matching information across your website, Google profile and other directories is one of the first gaps worth fixing.Answer real questions on your website
People ask AI tools full questions, the way they’d ask a friend. “How much does a website cost for a small shop?” “Which digital marketing agency in Mumbai is good for small businesses?”
You can help by putting those questions and their answers on your website, in an FAQ section or on your service pages. Write them the way people actually ask. This is what’s called answer engine optimization, or AEO for short. It means structuring your content so AI tools can read it, quote it and credit your site as the source. It sounds technical, but it’s really about answering clearly.Put the answer first, not the story
This is where many websites lose out. They start with three lines about “our passion and journey” before saying what they actually do.
Compare these two openings for a question like “best CRM for small business”:
Weak: “Choosing the right tool for your business can feel overwhelming, with so many options out there...”
Strong: “The best option for most small teams is X, because of Y. If you want Z, choose W.”
The second kind of answer is easy for AI to pick up and quote, and it’s easier for a real person to read too. That’s the core idea of AEO: the single answer block, not the whole page, is what gets picked up.
On your own pages, start with the direct answer in one or two lines. Then explain the details underneath.Get mentioned by other websites
What others say about you counts as much as what you say about yourself. Mentions from other trusted places, like local press, industry sites or partner websites, add to your credibility. is-a
Easy ways to start:
List your business on trusted directories for your industry
Offer a helpful quote or tip to local blogs, newspapers or business pages
Partner with another local business and feature each other
Share your expertise in places where people ask questions, such as Quora or relevant online groups
Even a few good mentions on real websites are worth more than hundreds of low-quality ones.Test it yourself, then fix the gaps
You don’t need any fancy tool for this. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask. For example:
“Best [your service] in [your area]”
“Is [your business name] good?”
“Who offers [your service] near [your area]?”
Write down who shows up, and whether you’re one of them. If you use ChatGPT, turn on its search option, because that’s when it shows where its answers come from. Then look at the sources it uses. Repeat the same questions over time and check the sources it points to. shiftflow
A quick checklist
Google Business Profile is claimed and completely filled out
I ask every happy customer for a review
My name, address and phone look the same everywhere
My website has an FAQ with real customer questions
Each page starts with the direct answer
Other websites mention my business
I test AI tools once a month
Where to start
Don’t try to do everything this week. Start with your Google Business Profile and your reviews. Those two give the biggest push for the least effort.
And keep your expectations real. AI tools change fast, and no one controls what they say. But a business that’s easy to find, easy to trust and clearly explained has a much better chance than one that isn’t.
Not sure whether AI tools can even see your business? That’s exactly what an audit shows. At GetMeReach, we check your website, Google profile, listings and AI visibility, then tell you what to fix first, in plain words with no pressure.
