Soft takeaway first: on 2026-11-02, coloring × ages 6–8 still looks enterable for a new indie (score 80.7, median reviews 3). Coloring × ages 9–12 is the same book_type with a much higher review barrier (median reviews 20, score 69.7). Vague “kids coloring” (unfiltered coloring niche) looks hottest on score alone — and is the worst brief if you treat it as a single upload target.
This post is the metric version of that claim.
What we pulled
From KDPTop niches (book_type=coloring × age_band), same day:
| Niche | Score | Median reviews | Median price | Est. daily sales | Breakouts | Indie share | Tracked books |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coloring (no age filter) | 84.4 | 4.0 | $9.99 | ~2019 | 220 | 0.80 | 3064 |
| Coloring × 6–8 | 80.7 | 3.0 | $9.99 | ~577 | 111 | 0.81 | 1572 |
| Coloring × 3–5 | 80.1 | 4.0 | $9.99 | ~535 | 66 | 0.80 | 955 |
| Coloring × 9–12 | 69.7 | 20.0 | $9.99 | ~398 | 29 | 0.74 | 361 |
| Coloring × adult | 48.9 | 49.0 | $9.99 | ~14 | 3 | 0.75 | 48 |
Same book_type. Different age_band. Different barriers. Price barely moves (~$9.99 across the kids bands); reviews and breakouts do.
Why score and “kids coloring is busy” disagree
The unfiltered coloring niche looks like the winner (score 84.4, ~2k est. daily units). Score is doing market-size work there. For a newcomer brief it is noisy: preschool, elementary, gift, and licensed titles share one bucket.
Segment by age and the story clarifies:
- 6–8: barrier part 0.988, breakout 1.0, influx 1.0, demand 0.837, feasible 0.963, indie 0.809 → total ~80.7
- 3–5: barrier 0.984, breakout 0.983, influx 1.0, demand 0.827 → total ~80.1 (near twin; fewer breakouts)
- 9–12: barrier 0.926, breakout 0.704, influx 0.812, demand 0.788, indie 0.743 → total ~69.7
- adult (this age_band coloring cut): demand 0.356, breakout 0.343, influx 0.471, barrier 0.836 → total ~48.9 (small sample, weak shelf vs kids bands)
In this schema, higher barrier ≈ friendlier review climate (low median reviews). 6–8 is near the ceiling. 9–12 still “good” on barrier relative to many adult puzzle leaves, but median reviews of 20 vs 3 is the commercial tax parents never see on the cover.
Themes also split: 6–8 skews animals / bible / culture / christmas / sports / travel / dinosaurs; 9–12 skews fashion / history / animals / sports / nature; 3–5 skews animals / trucks / alphabet / vehicles. Same verb (“coloring”), different product density.
How to read the parts (age_band edition)
Opportunity on these niches is not “search volume for kids coloring book.” It is a composite of structure parts you can inspect on the niche card:
parts ≈ indie, price, demand, influx, barrier, breakout, feasible score ≈ weighted blend of those parts (displayed 0–100) Practical reading for low-content operators:
- barrier — rises when median reviews fall. 6–8 (~3 reviews) vs 9–12 (~20) is the headline contrast.
- breakout / influx — NR→BS velocity and new-title pressure. 6–8 maxes both on this snapshot; 9–12 cools off.
- demand — est. daily units / market heat. Kids bands stay high; adult coloring in this cut collapses.
- price — flat here (~0.33 contribution at a $9.99 median). Do not invent a “9–12 pays more” story from this dataset.
- indie / feasible — can a KDP paperback live here? All kids bands clear; use them as a sanity check, not the whole go/wait.
Breakouts are a velocity primitive (first seen on New Releases, later on Best Sellers). 111 breakouts on 6–8 vs 29 on 9–12 is why “sweet spot” is not just a vibe word.
