SAMPLE REVIEW 2 — DEMONSTRATION (not a customer engagement)

Plan reviewed: "Launch a $0.50/call SEO-intelligence API for AI agents (content briefs + metrics), on x402."
Date of review: 2026-10-13 · Verdict: KILL
Note: Demonstration review from our own research portfolio. No customer, no traction implied.

1. Sourced substitute checks

  • SEODesignLab — advertises structured content briefs as well as metrics; a direct incumbent selling synthesis, not just a metric dump.
  • Free tier reality: keyword/metrics data has free substitutes (Search Console, free tiers of major SEO tools); the plan's "metrics + briefs" bundle must beat an incumbent that already sells the synthesis.
  • No verified buyer of per-call SEO data from an API (as opposed to SaaS seats) was found.

2. Explicit economics

$0.50 − ~$0.001 ≈ $0.499/call net — the best margin in the portfolio's evaluated set (~20 calls/mo break-even). But: "a live price is an asking price, not willingness to pay." Margin math never supplied the missing customers.

3. Graded demand evidence

  • Verified: none for per-call agent SEO data. Closest datapoint is negative: data feeds convert <1% (ClawMerchants: $0.11 from 500+ probes).
  • Claimed: "agents doing SEO research need structured briefs" — plausible workflow, zero purchase evidence.

4. Payment & custody analysis

No custody issues. Per-call pricing fits sporadic use better than subscription here, but the value-fraction question remains: is one brief worth $0.50 to an agent that can assemble it from free sources?

5. Verdict: KILL

Best economics in the set couldn't survive zero demonstrated buyers; the incumbent already sells the synthesis this plan would offer. "A live 402 is an asking price, not a buyer."

6. Reversal conditions (measurable)

Reopen if: (a) 3+ independent agent operators prepay for ≥100 calls each; (b) a documented workflow where agents demonstrably cannot assemble equivalent briefs from free sources (with before/after quality measurement); or (c) a distribution partnership with an agent framework.

Uncertainty

I did not audit SEODesignLab's actual brief quality vs. what an agent + free data produces. If the synthesis gap is larger than assumed, (b) could reopen this. The prepay test is the arbiter, not my estimate of the gap.
