The trap
A designer asks for "Shop first in the tab order." Someone sets tabindex="1" on Shop, tabindex="2" on Home, and keeps going through the filter bar. Lighthouse Accessibility flags Focus order. axe-core reports tabindex (serious). Keyboard users Tab into a scrambled path that no longer matches the visual layout.
Two tiny demos
-
broken.html: nav + product filters withtabindex1–6 on links, selects, and the Apply button. -
fixed.html: the same markup with every positivetabindexremoved (DOM order only). Skip link kept.
Measured (axe-core 4.14.0, headless Chrome)
broken: tabindex (serious) 6 nodes Tab trail: a[/shop]{tabindex=1}:Shop → a[/]{tabindex=2}:Home → a[/cart]{tabindex=3}:Cart → select#color{tabindex=4}:NaturalIndigo → select#size{tabindex=5}:SML → button{tabindex=6}:Apply filters → a[#main]:Skip to content fixed: 0 violations Tab trail: a[#main]:Skip to content → a[/]:Home → a[/shop]:Shop → a[/cart]:Cart → select#size:SML → select#color:NaturalIndigo → button:Apply filters On the broken page, Tab hits Shop before Home, then Color before Size, then the skip link — the opposite of a sane left-to-right reading order. After removing positive tabindex, Tab follows the DOM: skip → Home → Shop → Cart → Size → Color → Apply.
Pasteable FAIL → PASS
Broken (do not ship):
<nav> <a href="/" tabindex="2">Home</a> <a href="/shop" tabindex="1">Shop</a> <a href="/cart" tabindex="3">Cart</a> </nav> <select id="size" tabindex="5">…</select> <select id="color" tabindex="4">…</select> <button type="button" tabindex="6">Apply filters</button> Fixed:
<nav> <a href="/">Home</a> <a href="/shop">Shop</a> <a href="/cart">Cart</a> </nav> <label for="size">Size</label> <select id="size">…</select> <label for="color">Color</label> <select id="color">…</select> <button type="button">Apply filters</button> What to do in CI
const r = await axe.run(document, { runOnly: ['tabindex'] }); console.log(r.violations.map(v => `${v.id} ${v.nodes.length}`)); // broken → tabindex 6; fixed → (empty) If Lighthouse Focus order is red and axe is green on other rules, search the repo for tabindex="[1-9] before you rewrite the layout.

Honest limits
- axe
tabindexonly catches values greater than zero.tabindex="0"and-1are different tools; this demo is about the positive ones. - Focus order can still be wrong with zero positive tabindex (CSS order, off-screen controls, modals). Measure with Tab, not only with axe.
- Skipping the skip link on the broken page was a side effect of positive tabindex stealing the first stops — fix tabindex before you tune skip-link CSS.
