Most backend bottlenecks don’t happen because of poor hardware.

They happen because of unmanaged database connections.

When building high-throughput REST APIs using TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, one of the most common silent killers is exhausting your database connection pool.

Here is how we tackle this in production:

• Strict Pool Limits: Always cap max connections based on your DB instance specs (don't let Node open unbounded clients).
• Idle Timeouts: Terminate idle clients gracefully so your connection pool stays lean and responsive.
• Type-Safe Queries: Leverage TypeScript interfaces with pg or Prisma to catch schema mismatches before runtime.
• Exponential Backoff: Implement robust retry logic for transient connection drops.

Writing backend logic is easy. Keeping it resilient under concurrent load is where the real engineering begins.
