Midjourney, Flux and ChatGPT get compared as if one of them were simply the best picture-maker. They aren't competing for the same job. Pick by the sentence you'd say out loud before you open any of them.
This is a short version of our guide, Midjourney vs Flux vs ChatGPT for images. It only uses the rankings we've already published. There are no prices or benchmark scores here, on purpose. Check current pricing before you buy a plan.
The short version
On our Best for Images list the editorial order is Midjourney, Flux, ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, then Ideogram.
- "Make it look like someone composed it." Use Midjourney.
- "Follow this instruction exactly, and I may want to run the weights." Use Flux.
- "I'm already in this chat, and the picture has to match what we just said." Use ChatGPT.
- "The words on the poster must be spelled right." Leave this trio and use Ideogram.
Midjourney: for taste
Midjourney is first because it's still the aesthetic default. Composition straight out of the box beats most rivals, especially for concept frames and photo-like images.
The limits are part of the rank. Prompting is its own dialect, text inside the image is a gamble, and it isn't a production asset pipeline. Use it when the picture is the deliverable, not when the deliverable is a locked layout, a logo, or a line of type a client will spell-check.
Flux: for the instruction
Flux, from Black Forest Labs, is second. It has the best prompt adherence among the widely used image models on our list, and its open weights matter if you need to run or fine-tune a model yourself. The official playground is plainer than Midjourney, so you bring your own taste.
If you already know the composition and another model keeps dropping a constraint, try Flux. If you don't know what you want until you see something beautiful, Midjourney will waste less of your afternoon.
ChatGPT: for the conversation
ChatGPT is third. Use it when the image has to follow a fussy instruction, include readable text, or match a conversation you're already having. It's less beautiful by default than Midjourney, which is a fair trade when you're iterating in chat: describe the change, look, change one thing.
Readable text is why ChatGPT is the one of these three to try for a label or a short headline. It still isn't the type specialist; Ideogram is.
