If your home lab has outgrown a consumer router, the MikroTik RB5009 is a serious step up — without jumping to enterprise prices. This wired-only router is built for people who want stable routing, fast local transfers, and room to grow. Read the original Indonesian version here for the full local pricing context.

What you get

The RB5009 runs RouterOS v7 with a level 5 license. It has seven Gigabit Ethernet ports, one 2.5 Gigabit port, one 10G SFP+ cage, and one USB 3.0 port. Inside, a Marvell Armada 88F7040 quad-core ARM 64-bit CPU runs at up to 1.4 GHz, paired with 1 GB of DDR4 RAM and 1 GB of NAND storage. A Marvell 88E6393 switch chip connects over a 10 Gbps full-duplex internal link, so local switching is not held back by a slow internal bus.

It is passively cooled, measures 220 x 125 x 22 mm, and operates from -40°C to 60°C. That makes it a good fit for a quiet desk, a small rack, or a ventilated cabinet where you do not want another fan running all day.

Choose the right variant

There are two variants. The UG+S+IN model supports PoE-in only. The UPr+S+IN model adds PoE-out on all Ethernet ports, up to 25W per port and 130W in total. In Indonesia in early November 2026, the UG+S+IN was listed around Rp3.7–4.2 million, while the UPr+S+IN was around Rp5.05–5.1 million, based on Citraweb and marketplace listings. Prices may change with stock and exchange rates, so check before you buy.

Remember two practical points before ordering. The SFP+ cage is empty, so you must buy a compatible module or DAC cable separately. And because there is no built-in WiFi, you will also need a separate access point for wireless devices.

Why 10G matters in practice

The benefit of 10G is easiest to see in large transfers. Using a simple calculation that assumes 80% real-world throughput efficiency, moving 1 TB takes about 2.78 hours over 1 Gbps, 1.11 hours over 2.5 Gbps, and only 0.28 hours — about 17 minutes — over 10 Gbps. To be clear, these figures are calculations, not measurements from a physical RB5009 unit. Still, they show why a 10G link is valuable for backups, a NAS, video editing, or moving virtual machine images.

PoE planning is just as practical. On the UPr variant, for example, four access points at 12W plus four cameras at 15W total 108W. That stays under the 130W limit, leaving 22W to spare.

A safe first setup

The following steps are summarized from official MikroTik documentation. Connect your modem to ether1, then open 192.168.88.1 and sign in with username admin and no password. Set a strong admin password immediately, then update RouterOS to the latest stable version. After that, configure WAN, LAN, and DHCP, and apply a basic firewall. Do not leave the default login in place, even on a home network.

Final verdict

If you need reliable wired routing, a real 10G uplink, and optional PoE for access points and cameras, the RB5009 is a strong home-lab upgrade. Buy the PoE-out variant only if you will actually power devices from it; otherwise, the standard model keeps the cost down.
