KDE developer Eike Hein has introduced Kwi, a new experimental terminal emulator for Linux desktops built on the Ghostty library, Qt Quick, and Kirigami.

Kwi utilizes GPU-accelerated rendering via Vulkan or OpenGL and libghostty-vt for terminal parsing, delivering major performance gains over Konsole while improving Wayland fractional scaling and protocol support.

Speed and energy saving

Kwi leverages the graphics card to display graphics. According to its creator, Kwi is anywhere from 3 to 35 times faster than Konsole, depending on tests, while also expected to consume less battery.

The program handles modern high-definition displays better and supports special symbols, fonts, and complex text. It also adapts to KDE Plasma color themes, even if they change while the program is open, and reads Konsole color files. It also supports advanced features for displaying animations and mouse management.

Experimental nature and availability

Its creator makes it clear that Kwi is in a very early stage of development, with limited testing, and has not yet received its first official release.
