Three things happen when your data bundle empties on a UAE line, and only one of them is dangerous: speeds drop (annoying, harmless), add-ons auto-renew (quietly expensive), and pay-per-use charging kicks in - the wallet-killer. Out-of-bundle data in the UAE is priced high enough that one streaming evening can cost more than the monthly bundle you just exhausted.
What actually triggers it
Pay-per-use starts the moment your last bucket exhausts and the phone keeps requesting data: background sync, cloud photo backup, app auto-updates. Most victims never consciously browsed anything - the bill is composed of background traffic at pay-per-use rates. Our out-of-bundle charges guide documents the current rates per operator.
The daily-bundle conversion trap
Some plans convert exhausted buckets into automatic daily data bundles - the line "helpfully" re-bundles you at a daily price, every day, until you notice. The daily-plan charging guide explains which plans do this and the deactivation code for each. If your bill has a repeating small data charge after your bundle ran out, this is it.
The 60-second protection setup
- Set the usage alert at 80% in the carrier app - both support it.
- Turn off app store auto-updates over mobile data.
- Enable the operator's data-exhaustion block (both offer a setting that stops data instead of converting to pay-per-use; the guides above link the exact menus).
- Check whether any "unlimited" daily social package is still auto-renewing from last year.
Refunds exist, but prevention is easier
Both operators do refund clearly erroneous charges - the care lines (155 for du consumer, 101 for e&) process genuine disputes. But the refund conversation takes longer than the 60-second setup, and the second occurrence is harder to dispute than the first. Prevention wins on arithmetic alone.
We update guides whenever operators change their published rates - the whole library is browsable via the TelecomDesk UAE sitemap.
