Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's royal capital in the 11th and 12th centuries, and today its ruins are spread across a flat, shady site that is perfect for exploring by bicycle. If you are backpacking Sri Lanka on a budget, it is one of the best-value stops in the Cultural Triangle.
Getting there
Polonnaruwa is on the eastern railway line toward Batticaloa, and regular buses run from Dambulla, Habarana, Kandy, and Colombo. Most budget travellers come in from Dambulla or Sigiriya, which is roughly a 90-minute bus ride with a change at Habarana.
Seeing the ruins by bicycle
The ancient city is spread over several kilometres, so walking it in the heat is hard work. Guesthouses in the new town rent basic bicycles for a small daily fee, and the roads around the site are mostly flat.
- Buy your ticket at the archaeological museum near the lake first; it covers the main site.
- Start early, around opening time, to beat the heat and the tour buses.
- Carry plenty of water and wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, as many ruins are still sacred.
- Remove shoes and hats where signs ask you to, especially at the Gal Vihara.
Highlights not to miss
- The Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu: the remains of a once seven-storey palace, with thick brick walls still standing.
- The Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa): a dense cluster of the finest buildings, including the circular Vatadage.
- Gal Vihara: four large Buddha figures carved into a single granite face, the standout sight of the whole site.
- Parakrama Samudra: the huge ancient reservoir beside the town, lovely at sunset.
Where to sleep and eat cheaply
Family-run guesthouses in Polonnaruwa town are cheap, friendly, and often include bicycle hire. Rice and curry at local eateries near the bus stand keeps daily costs low.
Fitting Polonnaruwa into your route
Polonnaruwa sits close to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, where large herds of elephants gather around the reservoirs in the dry season. If you want to add a wildlife day, read the practical overview on Lanka Backpacking's Sri Lanka safaris guide before you book a jeep.
