Prisma 7's rewrite closed a lot of the gap with Drizzle. Not all of it.
The 30-second version:
Bundle size and cold starts
Prisma 7 dropped from roughly 14MB to about 1.6MB, a huge improvement. Drizzle is around 7.4KB and is cited with sub-15ms cold starts. On Cloudflare Workers with D1, or anywhere cold starts hit your bill or your latency, that still matters. Prisma did add native edge runtime support in November 2025.
Database support
Prisma covers PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, SQL Server, MongoDB and CockroachDB. Drizzle covers PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQLite, with no MongoDB. If MongoDB or SQL Server is in your stack, that decides it.
Schema style
Prisma is schema-first: a separate .prisma file plus a client generation step, with Prisma Studio on top. Drizzle defines schemas in TypeScript and relies on type inference, so there's no generation step and you stay close to SQL.
So which one?
- Want an abstracted, schema-first experience, multiple database types, or Prisma Studio: Prisma.
- Edge deployments where bundle size and cold starts matter, or you like writing close to SQL: Drizzle.
Both are mature, and moving between them is manageable. Full comparison and FAQ: Prisma vs Drizzle — full breakdown.
