What I Built

Repaso is a browser-based study companion built for Alex, a friend studying Systems at ITSS, inspired by the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend.

The idea is simple: turn a page of class notes into a short practice session. Alex can paste notes, ask for three recall questions, request an explanation with an example, or write his own explanation and ask for feedback.

The interface is in Spanish. The first example covers stacks and queues: LIFO, FIFO, push, pop, enqueue, and dequeue. These concepts are a useful starting point for practicing the difference between recognizing a definition and explaining it in your own words.

There are no accounts, database, or server-side AI API. Notes stay in the current tab and are not saved when it closes.

Alex has not tested the tool yet. I do not have user feedback or learning outcomes to report.

Demo

The local browser test followed this flow:

  1. Open the page on localhost.
  2. Click Activar IA local to download and initialize the model.
  3. Load the sample notes about stacks and queues.
  4. Click Crear práctica.
  5. Check that generated text appears and the download button becomes available.

The generation completed, but it also exposed a significant limitation: the 0.5B model repeated questions and incorrectly described a stack as FIFO in one answer. A working generation pipeline does not establish educational accuracy. The interface asks students to check responses against their notes, and this prototype needs a more capable model and a correctness evaluation before I would recommend relying on it for studying.

The initial Sites deployment is private to the owner. To make the demo reproducible for readers, both application files are included below. Save them together as index.html and app.js, then serve the folder:

python3 -m http.server 8000

Open http://localhost:8000 in a browser with WebGPU support and sufficient GPU memory. The first model download needs internet access and hundreds of megabytes. There is no service worker or fully offline startup guarantee.

How I Built It

Codex wrote the application from the project brief and the information I provided about Alex. It uses plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, without a build step.

The AI runs through WebLLM by MLC AI, using the WebLLM-compiled version of Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct by Qwen.

The activation button checks for WebGPU before loading the library. Download progress stays visible, and exercise generation remains disabled until the model is ready.

Generation uses engine.chat.completions.create with streaming. Each chunk is rendered through textContent, so model output is displayed as text rather than interpreted as HTML. The prompt separates reference notes from instructions and asks the model to use only the supplied material. That instruction is not a guaranteed defense against prompt injection.

An initial load failed with createRequire is not defined. The tested version loads WebLLM 0.2.78 directly from jsDelivr and uses a versioned application script URL. After those changes and a reload, model loading and generation completed. I did not isolate which change resolved the error, so I cannot attribute it to one cause.

Validation covered JavaScript syntax, a successful HTTP response, and a browser run of the generation flow. There has not been a systematic evaluation of answer accuracy, mobile compatibility, or accessibility.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open weights and WebLLM make it possible to run the model on the student's device. Generating an exercise does not require an AI provider's API key or sending the notes to a hosted inference service.

The application still makes network requests to download JavaScript and model files. Those providers receive the normal metadata associated with those requests. The specific privacy property is that the application code does not transmit the contents of the notes to an AI generation API.

An open model also gives us room to change the model and prompt. The first test demonstrated why that matters: a small model can load successfully and still produce unreliable teaching material. The next step is to compare a more capable model against questions with verified answers, measure download size and latency, and ask Alex to try the workflow.
