Scope creep rarely starts as a fight. It starts as "can you also…?" — and if you say yes three times, you've donated a second project.
I used to eat those hours. Now I treat every out-of-scope ask as a change order, using three short emails:
1) Scope confirm (before kickoff)
Lock deliverables, revision rounds, timeline, and fee. End with: anything not listed is a change order.
2) Change-order (mid-project)
Acknowledge the ask. State that it's outside the signed scope. Quote effort, fee, and timeline impact. Wait for "Approved."
3) Soft stop (already drifting)
Offer Option A (pay for extras now) or Option B (park for Phase 2). Calm, specific, no apology spiral.
I also keep a simple spreadsheet: one row per project, a change-order log that rolls up extra fees, and a dashboard of Active / Draft / Change pending.
If you want the pack ready-made (Excel / Google Sheets + the three scripts):

Not legal advice — just a lightweight habit so freelancers get paid for what they actually ship.
