NordVPN version 6.0 for Linux redesigns the command-line interface to reduce overlapping commands and unify protocol settings.
The update introduces NordWhisper for obfuscation and removes dedicated P2P groups.
Crucially, v6.0 breaks backward compatibility, affecting existing scripts, cron jobs, and systemd units, with no downgrade path for existing configurations.
What's new in the new version
The company says the new version is designed to make connection management simpler by reducing duplicate or overlapping commands. Among other things, protocol and technology settings are combined into a single command, while traffic concealment is now handled by a system called NordWhisper instead of a separate setting.
Additionally, because regular servers now directly support file sharing between users, there is no need for separate server groups solely for this purpose. As part of the simplification, the commands for selecting a virtual server have been removed, as the process is now done automatically, while some options have been renamed for clarity.
What should those who use automation pay attention to?
These changes are not backward compatible. This means that those who use automated scripts or scheduled tasks on their system to control the application will need to adapt them, as the old commands will not work.

Additionally, those who upgrade to version 6.0 will not be able to revert to an older version while maintaining their settings. However, those who use the application through the graphical interface with windows and buttons will not see any significant changes in their usage or settings.
The company continues to offer the ability to download configuration files for manual installation on routers, Linux devices, and storage systems. No specific release date has been announced for the new version.
