Time-Window Noise2Noise: Self-Supervised Blind Denoising of Mechanical Vibration and Impact Signals

arXiv:2608.24443v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Vibration and impact measurements in mechanical systems are invariably corrupted by noise, which degrades every quantity derived from them, such as modal parameters and contact forces. Classical filters rely on assumptions about the noise or the signal, and linear filters cannot remove the noise that shares the frequency band of the structural response. This work presents Time-Window Noise2Noise (TWN2N), a self-supervised method for blind denoising of signals produced by deterministic mechanical systems. The method requires neither a clean reference signal nor paired noisy observations, nor a measured noise variance or distribution: by reconstructing each time instant from its temporal neighborhood while masking the instant itself, a compact autoencoder is encouraged to exploit the coherent temporal and multichannel structure of the measurement rather than the noise. The formulation requires no model of the system and is assessed on two benchmarks with exactly known ground truth: the impulse response of a linear 3-degree-of-freedom system and a nonlinear Hunt-Crossley impact. Over repeated realizations, TWN2N exceeds a zero-phase low-pass filter with oracle cutoff at low and moderate input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and gives the largest gain inside the structural band, which a linear filter largely preserves, among the Savitzky-Golay and wavelet references; the advantage vanishes at high input SNR and under brown noise. The benefit propagates to identification: the damping ratio of the weakest mode, overestimated several-fold on the raw signals, is recovered close to its reference value after denoising.
