A final score gives you the headline. An illustrated recap should show a little of the route there.
For the 2024 Wimbledon men's final, the result was 6–2, 6–2, 7–6(4). The opening game contained five break-point opportunities. Later in the match, other service games became difficult in different ways. Those are events a report can point to. “He wanted it more” is a story the same data cannot establish.
This project combines match metadata, game-level points and an AI editor. Python computes an event ledger and a chart. The model selects which events to highlight. The displayed statements come from that ledger, so each is traceable to a set, a game and a match ID.
Disclosure: I maintain CrawlPlant's tennis Actors. The illustration uses the recorded historical point feed for Sf0bExdB, parsed with the production parser. The example editorial selection was prepared for this tutorial; it is not a measured output from a paid model run.
Run this project: Get the code, sample data and finished outputs on GitHub. To fetch your own data, use the live recipe and follow the .env setup guide to add your APIFY_TOKEN. Actor calls can incur charges; the setup explains per-run limits. AI recipes create an evidence packet without calling a model; optional --ai also requires your own OpenAI key and model. The live recipe builds recap evidence; the project folder includes the renderer for the illustrated Wimbledon card.
The finished recap
Here is the artifact this tutorial produces: a scoreboard, a pressure chart, three sourced events and a visible handoff between the Actors and the evidence ledger.
This editorial example uses the saved historical feed and the offline event selection below. Python draws the image; the optional model selects event IDs. The 17 break-point opportunities occurred across nine ordinary service games; the tiebreak is counted separately. No separate model API was called to make this illustration.
Retrieve both views of the same match
Install apify-client and matplotlib, set APIFY_TOKEN, and use the helper below. Calls can incur Apify charges. Configure spending limits and request a small number of matches first.
import os import json import math from pathlib import Path from datetime import datetime from urllib.request import Request, urlopen def call_actor(slug, run_input): from apify_client import ApifyClient client = ApifyClient(os.environ["APIFY_TOKEN"]) run = client.actor(f"crawlplant/{slug}").call(run_input=run_input) if not run or run["status"] != "SUCCEEDED": raise RuntimeError(f"Actor did not succeed: {run and run['status']}") rows = list(client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items()) if len(rows) >= run_input["maxItems"]: raise RuntimeError("Result reached maxItems; narrow the range or increase the cap before claiming completeness.") return rows match_id = "Sf0bExdB" details = call_actor("flashscore-tennis", { "mode": "matchIds", "matchIds": [match_id], "includeOdds": False, "includeH2H": False, "maxItems": 10, }) point_rows = call_actor("tennis-point-by-point", { "mode": "matchIds", "matchIds": [match_id], "pointByPointFormat": "games", "maxItems": 10, }) if len(details) != 1 or len(point_rows) != 1 or details[0].get("matchId") != match_id or point_rows[0].get("matchId") != match_id: raise ValueError("Both Actors must return the selected match") match = {**details[0], "pointByPoint": point_rows[0].get("pointByPoint")} The explicit games format provides server, winner and pressure markers. The compact Sackmann stream is useful for other workflows, but is not the input expected by this event extractor.
For this tutorial, the point-by-point row already includes the required match labels. The separate match lookup demonstrates the handoff for a larger newsroom workflow. If that second lookup would add no useful context, omit it and use the point row directly.

A game with five opportunities contributes one pressure game and five opportunities. The tiebreak is kept separate from ordinary service games.
These counts are about observed events. Neither the number of break points nor a hold after facing one establishes a player's mental state. The event ledger can support “faced five opportunities”; it cannot support “became nervous” without other evidence.
Let the AI choose the edit
Here is the optional model client. Set OPENAI_API_KEY and OPENAI_MODEL for a model supporting Structured Outputs. The API schema is described in the official guide.
def ai_json(payload, goal, schema): body = {"model": os.environ["OPENAI_MODEL"], "store": False, "max_output_tokens": 1600, "instructions": "Select and organize supplied evidence. The model may choose a poor selection even when every ID exists, so keep the unabridged event ledger available. A human editor can change the selection without changing any source numbers.
The offline branch demonstrates the final format without buying model tokens. Set RUN_AI=1 only when you want to execute the paid API call. An incomplete response, refusal or unknown evidence ID is an error, not permission to publish a partial recap.
Render the finished card, not just the numbers
Install matplotlib alongside apify-client. Save the following function after the event-ledger and selection code above. It draws the scoreboard, the game-by-game pressure chart, three selected event cards and the Actor handoffs. All metric cards and event descriptions come from the supplied records and ledger.
This is the complete renderer used for the illustration. Its canvas is deliberately designed for this one recorded final: it rejects another match, an unsupported selection, stale counts or event text that will not fit. Build a new layout before applying it to other matches.
