You recorded something important in Voice Memos, and now it shows 0:00, won't play, or throws an error when you share it. Here's why it happens and how to get the audio back.
Why it happens
Voice Memos saves recordings as M4A files, which use the same container format as MP4. The container has an index (the "moov atom") that's written when recording finishes. If the app crashes, the phone runs out of battery, or a call interrupts the recording, the audio data gets saved but the index doesn't. The result: a file full of audio that no player knows how to read.
What to try first
- Restart the iPhone and reopen Voice Memos. Sometimes the app finalizes the file on relaunch.
- Check Recently Deleted in Voice Memos in case the clip was moved there.
- Share the memo to Files or AirDrop it to a Mac. Even a "broken" memo can usually be exported as a raw .m4a file.
Recovering the audio
Once you have the .m4a file, you need to rebuild its index. Command-line tools exist, but the quickest route is FixMP4. It repairs corrupted or truncated M4A, MP4 and MOV files directly in your browser, so your recording never gets uploaded anywhere. You can preview the repaired audio for free before exporting.
Preventing it
- Keep the phone charged during long recordings.
- Pause or stop recording before taking calls.
- Let the recording finish saving before closing the app.
Interrupted voice memos are usually recoverable. Don't delete the file. Repair it with FixMP4.
