Let's expose a dirty little secret in the software industry: about 80% of the complex microservice architectures built in the last five years were completely unnecessary for the actual business scale.
Why did we build them? Simple. Because a Senior Developer wanted to play with Kubernetes, Kafka, and distributed systems so they could add those shiny keywords to their LinkedIn profile and land a higher-paying job at Netflix or Google next year.
We took simple, stable monolithic applications that could easily handle our traffic on a single server, and we chopped them up into 25 microservices. Now, instead of a simple in-memory function call, we have network latency, distributed tracing failures, data consistency nightmares, and a cloud bill that could fund a small country.
When a junior dev asks why a simple user login requires orchestrating four different services, the Senior Developer drops a wall of architectural buzzwords about "scalability," "decoupling," and "event-driven paradigms."
It’s not clean code. It's an architectural mystery novel where no one knows how the pieces actually fit together except the person who built it. And the moment that person leaves the company, the whole card house starts to shake.
True senior engineering isn't about making simple systems complex. It's about keeping complex systems simple. If you need a massive infrastructure team just to keep a basic web app online, you didn't build an architecture. You built a liability.
If you are currently drowning in distributed system slop and debugging network timeouts caused by someone else's over-engineered resume project, go check out the corporate reality gear pinned in my profile bio.
