Australia’s Cerberus MI, developed by Skyborne Technologies, has been approved for the Pentagon’s Blue UAS procurement list.

The reusable 18 kg drone combines sensor information with onboard AI; human operators decide whether to engage targets.

It can carry a shotgun or 40mm grenade launcher.

No order or delivery timeline has been announced.

What is Cerberus MI?

The drone was developed by Skyborne Technologies. It weighs 18 kg and has the ability to carry weapons, such as a hunting rifle or a 40 mm grenade launcher, with a maximum payload of 4 kg. Unlike other drones that are destroyed during their mission, the Cerberus MI is reusable and can return to its base.

The system has built-in artificial intelligence that helps combine information from its sensors, supporting the detection and engagement of targets at a distance of more than 300 meters. Despite its technological capabilities, decisions to execute the shot are made exclusively by human operators. Fully equipped, the drone can fly for about 35 minutes, developing a maximum speed of 54 kilometers per hour.

What does the Pentagon's approval mean?

The approval follows thorough checks on the safety of the drone's systems and the company's supply chain.

It is important to clarify that the inclusion in this list does not constitute an order for the system by the US. At present, no contract has been announced, nor has a timetable for the acquisition of the drones been announced. The approval simply sets the framework for US agencies to be able to proceed with purchases in the future, should they choose to do so.
