KANGERLUSSUAQ, GREENLAND - JULY 18: Arthur Fouille (L), a PhD student in microbiology and subglacial environments at Cryoeco, the Cryosphere Ecology Group at Charles University in Prague, and Tereza Vosicka, a PhD student of hydrobiology at the Charles University department of Diatoms in Cryospheric Ecosystems, collect glacial meltwater and sediment samples at an upwelling at the Isunnguata Sermia glacier of the Greenland Ice Sheet on July 18, 2026 near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. An upwelling is a phenomenon in which meltwater flowing under pressure from underneath the glacier surges to the surface. A scientific team from Charles University, which is supplying samples and data to other universities internationally, is spending six weeks camped in front of the glacier analyzing the cycle of carbon and organic content emerging in meltwater from the glacier. Bacteria underneath Isunnguata Sermia are consuming organic matter and producing greenhouse gases, including methane, which are released into the atmosphere through meltwater from the ice. The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting at a rate that has accelerated sharply in recent decades. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
