AI startup Anthropic is targeting a public listing this year with a projected valuation of up to $2 trillion.

Backed by major early investments from venture firms and private backers, its private market valuation has climbed significantly since its early funding rounds.

The first investors and the huge profits

According to data published by Bloomberg, former Google chief Eric Schmidt, who invested in the company from its early stages in 2021 at a valuation of $461 million, now owns about 1% of Anthropic. His stake is worth almost $10 billion at the current private valuation.

Big investment firms are also seeing huge gains. Iconiq raised $6 billion last year when the company was valued at $183 billion, and now has a stake worth $17 billion, which it estimates could double after going public. Menlo Ventures led a major round of funding and has invested more than $1 billion in total over time, with its stake now valued at $14 billion.

The course of the remaining investors

Sequoia, a well-known investment firm, participated this year with $3 billion, acquiring about 1% of the company, having already more than doubled its money. Sound Ventures invested $35 million in 2023 and added an additional $400 million later. It is noteworthy that actor Ashton Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to start a new investment firm.

Finally, Spark Capital is the only investment firm we know of that holds a seat on Anthropic’s board. It invested $75 million in 2023 when the company was valued at $5 billion, and that investment has since multiplied over 90 times, reaching $7 billion.
